Who can apply for Toastmaster Training?
Who should apply?
Although the role of Toastmaster has historically been male-dominated, the profession has evolved significantly. Many women now excel in this field— indeed, some clients note that audiences can be even more attentive when the Toastmaster is female.
Toastmasters come from an array of professional and personal backgrounds, but the role is especially well suited to individuals who genuinely enjoy working with people. A warm personality, strong organisational skills, and impeccable personal presentation are essential. Equally important are tact, diplomacy, and an unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding customer service
Experience that proves valuable
Experience in drama, public speaking, or stage performance can be a great asset, as can fluency in an additional language. Clear, articulate speech and confident use of correct grammar are highly valued. There are no formal age requirements; however, maturity and sound judgement are considered significant advantages.
The role is particularly attractive to those who are retired or semi-retired and who can offer a degree of flexibility, especially at weekends. Basic computer skills, the ability to use email confidently, and reliable, well presented transport are also important. While experience in people management is helpful, it is not essential—full professional training is provided.
This career path appeals strongly to individuals transitioning from structured professions such as the police or military, where discipline, composure, and attention to detail closely align with the expectations of a professional Toastmaster.
Age should never be a barrier. Increasing numbers of younger people are entering the profession, often seeking a second income or part-time opportunity. The ability to connect naturally with young couples is a real advantage. Ultimately, success in this role hinges on personality: modern, personable, approachable Toastmasters—far removed from the outdated stereotype of the “stuffy old man in a red tailcoat” – are in high demand.
